Non essential fatty acids

The body can make most of the fatty acids in needs from the carbon, hydrogen and oxygen provided by food.

Because human body can make saturated and omega 9 fatty acids, it is not essential to get them in the diet. Therefore it can be called non essential fatty acids.

Nonessential does not mean unimportant; it simply means it is not essential to consumed these fats in the diet.

The body can produce an adequate supply of the nonessential fatty acids as demand occurs.

Palmitoleic and oleic acids, the two most abundant monounsaturated fatty acids of animal lipids, can be synthesized from the respective saturated fatty acid coenzyme A ester.

Other non essential fatty acids such as palmeric acid, oleic acid, myristic acid, lauric acid, stearic acid, and many other can be used as an energy source.

These are the fatty acids containing no double bonds and are represented by the general formula –CnH2n+1COOH.

These fatty acids that containing 10 carbon atoms or fewer in their molecules are liquid at room temperature; the remainder are solids whose melting point rises with increasing molecular weight.
