Tangerine fruit

The name of tangerine is form Tangiers, a seaport of Morocco, where fruit is popular. The tangerine is a citrus fruit, usually round and about 2.5 inches in diameter, smaller than the orange.

It rough, fragrant rind is generally orange or red-orange thin, and loose on the fruit, so that it peels very easily.

There are many types of tangerine grown around the world because they are delicious when eaten out of hand and they have different disease susceptibility than sweet oranges.

Tangerine ripens during January, February, March, and April and is to be found in many western markets during those months.

Several varieties of tangerines are available, such as Satsuma, a sweet and nearly seedless Japanese tangerine; Kinnow, a thin-skinned, yellowish, harder to peel fruit and Clementine, a larger , deep orange, bumpy-skinned tangerine.

The most popular variety of tangerine in the United States is the Dancy, a very sweet fruit with a red-orange color and a mellow flavor.
